The charity PoTS UK supports people with postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS).
PoTS is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system – the nervous system that controls bodily functions that we do not have to think about such as heart rate, blood pressure, sweating and digestion.
When people with PoTS stand upright, their heart and blood vessels are unable to adjust to the pull of gravity and they experience many disabling symptoms including recurrent blackouts, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, palpitations, breathlessness, chest pains, visual problems, sweating, diarrhoea, trembling and disturbed sleep. Although patients often look well, they can experience considerable levels of disability and many are unable to work or continue with their education.
At the present time, many health care professionals, including doctors, have not heard of PoTS and consequently patients are often misdiagnosed. In the UK the average time from onset of PoTS symptoms to diagnosis is 7 years, but some patients wait 20+ years. However, once correctly diagnosed, successful treatments are available and the vast majority of patients will improve.
PoTS UK offers support and advice to individuals with PoTS, helping sufferers to continue living a valuable and rewarding life despite this challenging health condition. They initiate and support research, hold lectures, help to fundraise and work on medical awareness campaigns.
